Rainbow splatter! This was actually pretty fun and easy to do. But be warned - it was messy. This was full on toothbrush splattering. There was paint everywhere. But look at it! Look at the pretty!
The rainbow splatters are done using fluid acrylic paint and a tooth brush. I taped around my nails to try save them from some of the inevitable mess. I mixed the paint (it should flow freely but not be too runny or watery) in a little plastic cup and then pressed the toothbrush into the paint. Basically you aim at your nail and run your thumb over the brush to splatter. This results in the following mess:
Yup. As you can see the tape helped. Acrylic paint sticks to polish like its life depends on it, but it's pretty easy to get off skin. Especially if you get to it quickly. I top coated my nails with Seche Vite and let it dry for a few minutes then washed my hands with soap and warm water.. and dried them "vigorously". All was well.
This is something very easy to do on both hands, however I would recommend using gloves. Latex gloves (like doctors use) are great! I also use them if for some reason I only want to take polish off one hand.
Hope you like! Happy hump day!
Edit: An appearance of the mythical thumb!
When I did this mani it was planned as a full two hand 10 finger mani. I did my base colour and got all my paints out and newspaper everywhere, taped around my fingers. I was ready to rock. I reached for my trusty glove and found it... full of tiny kitty tooth holes. No! I went to my stash storage for another. None. NO!
I had no gloves. This would make it impossible to do this mani on both hands - I was peeved. So I just did the four fingers on my left hand. My right hand was such a mess, haha! Every colour, everywhere. I should have taken a pic.
A lot of people have been asking what to do with the thumb. I had planned to do purple to red. I have more gloves now, so I decided to quickly do my thumb for you all to see what it was supposed to look like! The density on the splatters is a bit different for whatever reason, but here are the colours.
For the paint mixes, I added a bit of white to EVERYTHING for better opacity. Just a little to the red, yellow and green, and rather a lot to the blue and purple. You can see the paints I used for red to blue in the second pic. The white is Titanium White and the purple is Dioxazine Purple - same brand, Golden Fluid Acrylics.
Hope that helps! Just an extra tip: I found the best way to clean any escaped paint off my cuticles is with a brush dipped in polish thinner. I used the Orly one. Works really well!

But but but... where are indigo and purple?????? :O
ReplyDeleteHmm.. you know what, I really like the 5 colour cartoon style rainbow. Also, I like seeing them all lined up on those four fingers!
DeleteI have to agree, this looks pretty neat! Still, indigo and purple are in my opinion the prettiest of all the rainbow colours. But hey, you're the rainbow expert, who am I kidding ;)
DeleteI totally have a thing for rainbow mani's at the moment and this is awesome :) x
ReplyDeleteThanks! Rainbows are always awesome

ReplyDeleteoh oops caps lock. if i could pick rainbow as a favorite color i would too. i am with you on that one! also, i love these.
Tape is your friend! Really, it's not so bad with tape. Never do a gradient without tape. THE HORROR.
DeleteHi I am going to do this design but I don't know what to do with the thumb. Can anyone help
ReplyDeleteHey! The thumb is meant to start at purple, so purple to red on the thumb. Hope that helps! I'd love to see your mani when you do it!
DeleteRemember to wear a glove on the other hand if you want to do both! Or tape over your nails to protect them from the paint :)
I really don't get it how you did your thumbs. Can I see a picture?Sorry, but I'm a little new to nail coloring and stuff.Great nails,by the way!Would like to do them.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
I didn't do the thumb on the day (I edited and explained why). I did my thumb today though and have posted a pic so you can see! Hope your mani turns out well! Let me know if you have any questions. I'm happy to help.
